It's rare that I get very enthusiastic about a gardening book - I enjoy most of them, but don't get too excited about the contents because I've usually read the same information elsewhere, in different words. However, I recently was able to get a copy of the one above through the County inter-library loan system, and just renewed it for another month.
You can read about it here:
gardening when it counts
and here:
gardening when it counts
I haven't managed to make my way through the entire book - the recent snows and cold weather have put a damper on my gardening urges and I switched to other escapism in book form: a recent China Bayles mystery (by Susan Wittig Albert) and the post-apocalyptic The Postman (by David Brin). But warmer weather is predicted this weekend, so I hope to finish it soon.
I especially like that he endorses using only hand tools, little irrigation, and doesn't insist on raised beds - all methods I currently employ to some extent, but it's nice to see them endorsed. :)
He also has a whole chapter on his feelings about the big box stores - hah!
Steve Solomon was the founder of Territorial Seed Company and has authored other gardening books. Give it a look-see, if you can. I intend to keep my eyes opened for a used copy...

I've put it on hold at my library. I look forward to reading it! Hopefully soon, we'll be gardening instead of reading about gardening...
Hi , Sounds like a great book , plan to check our local library and see if they have it.
Love your kitty photos.

I renewed the one I have from our library - it's due next week & I'm going to hate to part with it. The chapter on homemade organic fertilizer is intriguing. I'm going to look for the ingredients.
Let me know what both of you think of it, okay?
I've heard a lot about this book. Unfortunately my library doesn't have any (lame!) for me to scope out first. Maybe I'll snoop around a local bookstore. Or maybe he's so against box stores his books aren't sold there. ;)
I certainly couldn't follow the no irrigation thing here very easily. But I really want to see what else he says.
