
I'm not sure you can see it very well in these photos - click on them to enlarge - just how the deer have kept my bean plants "trimmed." They've been clipped off almost evenly at about 18 inches tall. Anything below that is relatively 'safe.' In the top photo, the chard is on the left and the beets - what's left of them - are on the right, next to the carrots, which remain untouched. (Ignore the weeds, please. In case you're wondering, the weeds are purslane, which I'm letting grow to try to recover some seeds, mallow, and the worst offender, field bindweed - aka wild morning glory. I have found no use for this plant - a true weed, and most prolific in my yard.)
