Wow! Over a month since I last posted anything. Well, it's been a depressing month-and-a-half, so it's difficult to be bright and cheerful online when I don't feel that way.
Anyway....
Last fall, when I was cleaning the garden, pulling out tomato plants, etc., I found some small basil plants still thriving - well, that's stretching it - not "thriving" exactly, because they were very shaded by the tomato plants...how about 'still growing' - so, I decided to carefully pull a couple out and stick them in some water for awhile, to see what happened. Well, they're still alive. They've been dropping leaves, the tops have died, but some of the stems are still growing. In the photo above, the 2 on the right are cinnamon basil; the one on the left is just regular sweet basil. I've used the leaves from the latter, but all I've done with the cinnamon leaves are rub-and-sniff.
When I brought them into the house, I was originally going to pot them up, but never got around to it. The only problem with keeping them in the window in the water was/is having to move them every night when I pull down the shade during the cold winter. As it warms up (eventually), I won't have to bother with that.
