Independence Days Challenge

Sharon at Casaubon's Book [one of my mentors, tho' she doesn't know it :) ] has issued a formidable and life-changing challenge, her first: do one thing every day to create Food Independence Days. So, in each day (or week) we will try to:
1. Plant something
2. Harvest something
3. Preserve something
4. Prep something
5. Cook something
6. Manage your reserves
7. Work on local food systems
Two participants have added some additional ideas I'd like to include as 7a. Compost something/Give back to the land (Thanks, Ethan) and 7b. Learn a new skill (Thanks, Lesley!) More details on each category can be found on her blog.
Whew! Sounds like a whole lot to accomplish each week, doesn't it. But, in looking back at the previous week, I realize that I HAVE been doing/meeting some of these goals. For example, I planted my asparagus roots plus several cool weather crops on the weekend; I baked bread last evening (Sedge's recipe - more on that later); I dried a few pounds of bananas; I found a great deal on a 'used' freezer, and therefore was able to clear out the fridge above my fridge AND use /cook up some of my goodies from the garden last year; I hit up a yard sale and scored an Osterizer blender with a glass container for 4 bucks(!); I emptied the compost bucket and turned some of last year's compost over into the new pile; I even "harvested" something if you count the leaf of sorrel and the leaf of volunteer spinach I plucked while out in the garden - and promptly ate!
Adding the 'learn new skill' category will hopefully prompt me to get busy with making my own yogurt - something I've done in the past (back in the 70s, in my earth muffin days), but have been dragging my feet about doing again.
I've post a photo, albeit blurry of my first attempt at making Sadge's bread recipe aka One Hour French Bread. I love this recipe! One hour!! Now I have no excuse for not having any bread. But, I can boast a little bit and say I have NOT purchased a loaf of bread (of any kind) since before Thanksgiving of last year, maybe even earlier!
I'm going to love this challenge! It will make me work toward goals I've wanted to accomplish anyway.

That loaf looks beautiful! Isn't that a wonderful recipe? It's just so easy and so quick to make. Glad you're spreading the word!

Glad to have found your blog! I really like your garden pictures...we had some snow last week too, but you are still way ahead of me in the garden department!
