Chile Chews (one of my favorite blog sites) has issued a new challenge:
we are being challenged to give up on of our addictions. Really good timing for me because just this weekend I was thinking about what I couch potato I became during cold, snowy/rainy March & April while waiting for good gardening weather to arrive. Most of the time I would end up falling asleep watch some useless program, then finally drag myself grumpily off to bed - only to not be able to get back to sleep!
I have a very small, old B&W tv that my Mom bought for my girls back when I was still in school (we're talking back in the 70s here) so they could watch tv in their room while I was studying. I have it sitting on a stool in a corner of the dining area where I can see it from the kitchen while I rattle around in there, trying to be productive. I enjoy watching the early local news & weather, plus Charlie Gibson (love his smile!), followed by the Lehrer News Hour on PBS.
Last evening, after spending an hour or so in the garden after work, the cats & I came in for supper, after which I was able to make bread (Sadge's recipe, of course) and try a new bar cookie recipe (a peanut butter-chocolate ship-oatmeal concoction) - really yummy! - and still get my news fix. Now let's see if I can last through the whole month of June...
[I realize that giving up this particular addiction now that the particular programs I watch are done for the season may not seem like a particularly strenuous challenge, but hey, I'm not about to give up coffee or chocolate - but I am buying fair trade of those.]
