The Weekend

It was a busy - and HOT!! - weekend. So busy, I didn't even take any garden pix. This one is from last week - all the stuff I have/had to plant. L-R: basil, tomatoes, 2 gourds (old seeds) in the juice cans, cukes (in the milk cartons). Got about half of it planted, plus the grapes. Had to do lots of digging - my back is really stiff & sore today. Took some time off yesterday afternoon to visit with friends from the Missoula area.

The temps went from heavy frost on the ground early in the week to our first 80+ day since last Sept. on Friday, to 90 on Saturday! Yikes! Didn't dare plant the tomatoes for fear they would fry. Got them in the ground on Sat. evening. Sunday was a bit cooler - only 85. Will cool down significantly this week, plus rain is expected - got to get the rest of the tomatoes in the ground!

Bought flowers for planters - Fred's (Fred Meyer) had flats of annuals on sale, & I like to plant red petunias in back for the hummingbirds and bees. In the front, since the house is pink, I use dark burgundy, usually, but found some 'rose-rainbow mix' (pinks, dk. rose, etc.), so got those plus a few white. 3 flats altogether - 144 plants. Worked on those last evening. Not EVER going to do all that in one session again! Will try to take a photo tonight. Used every planter/pot I have.

Didn't get fruit trees planted; didn't pick rhubarb, which is suddenly 2 ft tall; didn't dig up corn bed or new bed for potatoes. (sigh) Did get the lawn mowed - wh/ is a project in itself. I will say it right now: I DO NOT like to mow grass. If I didn't have to, I wouldn't. Waste of time - it's just going to grow again. That's why I"m trying to convert as much to garden as I can, but it's a slow process.

I was thinking this weekend that I need a clone. Not a housekeeper/maid to do the housekeeping, nor a handyman/helper to do the hard work - just a clone of myself - because I LIKE to do all the stuff - baking bread, cutting up the 4 chickens for the freezer, hanging out the laundry, digging new beds & planting 144 petunia in pots - I just get really tired trying to do it all on the weekends. Sounds like I need to reorder my weekday evenings, doesn't it...
