Independence Days Report

View of the wet, wet, wet garden through the window

All of this was done last weekend - it's been rainy and cool since Sunday, so no outside work has been done. (and making it quite difficult to meet Chile's newest challenge)

Planted: got the popcorn planted, finally; also the loofah seed starts/plants; some unknown plants, could be peppers; the unhappy blueberry plant from my daughter; and, the greatest accomplishment, the fruit trees are now planted (wore myself out on those). NOTE: after all this rain & cool weather, I'm wondering if I planted the popcorn too early & the seed is just going to rot in the ground...?
Harvested: more rhubarb; the first radishes & non-volunteer/planted leaf lettuce; more sorrel & green onion for a supper salad.

Preserved: more rhubarb-strawberry jam; dried overripe bananas, lemon slices; experiment: dried strawberrries
Prepped:
orange juice on sale - for freezer; also a few packages of frozen peas & corn; bought more canning lids; filled empty 1/2 gal milk carton w/water for freezer
Cooked:
not much new - some rhubarb sauce to have in the fridge to eat during the week;
roasted asparagus for the first time - yum!
Managed: put all pkgs of flour into freezer now that garage is (was!) beginning to warm up - it's since cooled off again); realized the next batch of homemade cat food will have to be stored/frozen in smaller containers. The 1-lb cottage cheese containers are too big to use in just a few days before it goes bad. Froze some in ice cubes trays - these work fine but don't have enough for the quantity the recipe makes.
Local Food Systems: made another stop at The Grain Mill (my new favorite store) & talked to the owner about his local sources of eggs (yay!); also stocked up on large (paper) bag of oatmeal - 6 lbs, and some whole wheat flour, ground by them. Forgot to ask where the wheat was from.
Composted/Gave back to the land: used some of the compost in bin 1 for fruit trees and around blueberry bushes.
No new skills/relearned skills unless you count digging holes for planting trees - haven't done that for a long, long while...

Chile! This is so cool! I'm going to have to try this - I think one for each grandchild should be on my list! - plus one for me. I like the little strap under the arm to secure it. Now, to hunt up the PDF.
Thanks for this!!
